New Year’s Resolutions - Focus on Building the New

It’s that time again… when millions of people all over the world take part in the tradition of setting New Year’s Resolutions; promises to ourselves to either start doing something good or stop doing something bad on the first of the year.

According to Inc. Magazine, the three most common New Year’s Resolutions are:

  1. Diet or Eat Healthier (71%)

  2. Exercise More (65%)

  3. Lose Weight (54%)

But while 60% of the population sets annual personal goals, only about 8% achieve them.

These three resolutions have been at the top of my list MANY, MANY times throughout the course of my life - starting when I was just a teenager. My quest to be healthier involved following the latest fad diet, purchasing a gym membership or workout DVDs and exercise equipment to train at home. I typically lasted a week or two before skipping a workout or “cheating” on my diet, and once that happened, I’d throw in the towel and give up… AGAIN… until next year (obviously… since a new year or new month or Monday morning is the only time you can possibly start something new…).

First of all… how ridiculous is it that I let one small setback completely derail me from reaching my goal?  The last time you had a flat tire, did you slit the other three because you thought, “Well, it’s not driveable anyway!” NO!  Of course not.

Over the course of a decade, I tried EVERY diet and exercise program on the market and FAILED - THOUSANDS OF TIMES - BEFORE I SUCCEEDED.

But January 1, 2014 was different. A few months prior, I had discovered the 130-pound weight loss story of Dawn Bryant in People magazine. She had hired Jason Burgoon, owner and lead trainer of Bodies by Burgoon in Minneapolis, MN, as her trainer the year before and he helped her reach her goals. The gym just so happened to be a 40-minute drive from my house - and I thought, “If this man could have such a profound impact on this woman’s health and life - then maybe he can help me, too.” So I made the call.

I scheduled my first training session with Jason on January 9th, 2014. Instead of setting my usual resolution to lose weight or follow a certain diet or exercise daily, my goal was to make 2014 “The Year of SELF-CARE”. My little boy (Tye) had just turned one, and like most new moms, I was entirely too busy and overwhelmed taking care of his needs to put energy into taking care of myself.

But I decided that 2014 was going to be different. I stopped “trying” and started “doing”. And instead of wasting all my energy on fighting the old, I focused on building the NEW. And it changed my life in EVERY. SINGLE. WAY.

It changed my relationship with food and exercise.  It changed the way I feel about myself. It changed the way I parent my child.  It gave me the courage and confidence to leave a marriage that was no longer serving me and become a single, working mom. It introduced me to competitive powerlifting and the physical strength I found in that sport spilled over into every other area of my life. And it inspired me to become a Personal Trainer and Nutrition Coach and help others define what strong means to them.



So this year… if you find yourself struggling to stick to your resolution of weight loss, diet and exercise, I encourage you to shift your focus to building the NEW. Eat nutrient-filled foods that fuel your body and give you energy, drink water, get plenty of sleep, move more throughout the day, find healthy ways to manage your stress, and spend quality time with the people you love. If you put all of your energy into practicing these healthy habits, I promise you weight loss will follow.
